2018-19 Under-23 Premier League 2

Development Coach : Liam Manning and Steve Potts

There's been a few changes to the West Ham United Academy over the summer, with Steve Potts and Liam Manning now taking control of the U23s this season.

West Ham United's Under-23s will compete in the Premier League 2, the EPL Trophy and the Premier League International Cup. A maximum of three players aged 23 or over permitted in each starting XI. The EPL Trophy, will see West Ham's young professionals compete against senior first-team squads from three clubs in the Football League pyramid, 64 competing clubs entered into 16 four-team groups organised on a regional basis, with the top two in each group qualifying for the knockout stages. The PL International Cup will feature Southampton, FC Porto (Portugal) and Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia).

The majority of home games are scheduled to be played at Dagenham & Redbridge's Chigwell Construction Stadium, but a minimum of three fixtures will be selected to play at the London Stadium.

Arsenal inflicted a London derby defeat for West Ham United’s U23s on Friday night as the Gunners were 3-2 winners in Premier League 2 at London Stadium. Julio Pleguezuelo’s header – sandwiched between two Eddie Nketiah’s goal – meant Xande Silva and Reece Oxford strikes eventually counted for nothing as the visitors took all three points.

U23s coach Liam Manning is delighted with how his side performed in the second half of their opening game of the season; a 3-1 victory away to Tottenham Hotspur. West Ham United had found themselves a goal behind after just six minutes but were level at the break as Xande Silva – making his competitive debut for the U23s – powered an effort home at the near post. The striker then netted just a minute after the restart with a composed finish before completing his hat-trick on 49 minutes with another, excellent strike.

A slow start put West Ham United’s U23s on the back foot in their 6-4 defeat against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, according to boss Liam Manning. The Hammers – who played for nearly an hour with ten men after Tunji Akinola’s sending off – were beaten in a topsy-turvy game in which ten goals were scored at Dagenham and Redbridge’s Chigwell Construction Stadium. City went in 3-1 up at half time after Xande Silva’s late goal gave the hosts a shout, and though Josh Cullen headed in to make it 3-2 with 20 minutes left, the visitors rushed down the other end to dampen West Ham spirits. Three minutes into injury time, Alfie Lewis struck but once again, City dashed forward and restored their two-goal advantage. Incredibly, there was time for the exact same thing to happen once more after Oladapo Afolayan scored his first West Ham goal, but coach Manning bemoaned his team’s disappointing start and labelled the performance “frustrating”.

Goals from Reece Oxford and Joe Powell secured West Ham United's U23s their second win of the season on Sunday as they were 2-1 victors at Liverpool. The visitors took an early lead through captain Oxford's looping header but were pegged back five minutes into the second half. Joe Powell, however, stepped up to score a 73rd minute free-kick and give the Hammers six points from six on the road so far this campaign.

West Ham United's U21 side were beaten 2-0 in their opening Checkatrade Trophy fixture at Bristol Rovers.Goals from Alex Jakubiak and Tom Lockyer sealed the win for the League One hosts, who fielded a strong starting XI against the east Londoners' youngsters. Xande Silva went close to giving the Hammers the lead in the first half but Rovers ultimately proved too strong in the Group L opener.

Brighton & Hove Albion:

Keto, Davies, Cochrane, Collar (Tilley 70), Barclay, O'Hora, Dreyer, Normann, Connolly, Andone (Davies 46), Gyokeres

A number of small lapses in concentration was what ultimately cost West Ham United’s U23s in the 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Hammers played terrifically for a large majority of the Premier League 2 clash at the Amex Stadium but conceded twice in the final 15 minutes meaning they travelled back to the capital empty handed.

Grady Diangana had given the visitors a 20th minute lead with a superb strike inside the box, but Viktor Gyokeres and Aaron Connolly turned the game on its head with their second half goals.

West Ham United's U23s suffered a London derby defeat by Chelsea on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 at the Chigwell Construction Stadium. Two early penalties – one for each side, scored by Billy Gilmour and Joe Powell for Chelsea and West Ham respectively – meant the scores were level at the break but a second half sending off for Tunji Akinola turned the game in the visitors' favour. Charlie Brown scored the decisive second half strike to give his team all three points in Dagenham.
