2016-17 Under-23 Premier League (Divison 2)

Development Coach : Terry Westley

STOKE CITY : Premier League 2

West Ham United's Development Squad will compete in two newly-revamped competitions in 2016/17 - Premier League 2 and the EPL Trophy. Premier League 2 replaces the Under-21 Premier League, a maximum of three players aged 23 or over permitted in each starting XI. The EPL Trophy, will see West Ham's young professionals compete against senior first-team squads from three clubs in the Football League pyramid. The new format will see 64 competing clubs entered into 16 four-team groups organised on a regional basis, with the top two in each group qualifying for the knockout stages.

The majority of home games are scheduled to be played at Dagenham & Redbridge's Chigwell Construction stadium, but a minimum of three fixtures will be selected to play at the London Stadium.

West Ham United’s Development Squad side kicked-off their Premier League 2 season with a 3-0 victory against Stoke City. Ashley Fletcher, Antonio Martinez and a Ryan Sweeney own-goal sealed the victory for the Hammers at Leek Town’s Harrison Park stadium, where Terry Westley’s sidfe controlled the game from start to finish.

It took the youngsters just three minutes to take the lead when Grady Diangana provided a fantastic inswinging cross towards Fletcher, who nodded past Potters goalkeeper Daniel Gyollai.

It was two on the half-hour mark when Fletcher saw his one-on-one effort saved by Gyollai, but Martinez managed to divert the rebound in off the far post.

The moment of the game went to Fletcher who tried an outrageous effort from just inside Stoke’s half which left Gyollai helpless, but the lob crashed onto the bar and bounced out for a goal kick.

Fifteen minutes from time the Hammers got their third in fortunate fashion. A corner from the left was unintentionally diverted towards the far post where Oliver Shenton cleared the ball off the line, only for it to hit team-mate Sweeney and bounce into the back of the net.

All Premier League sides entered into this competition must field a total of at least six Under-21 players in their starting line up, while Football League teams must include five 'first team' players. Points are allocated as league points would be. However, should a match finish as a draw, a penalty shootout will take place, with the winning side being awarded an extra point.

In a game of two halves, the Hammers gained maximum points from the opening two games. The youngsters dominated a first half in which they scored twice through Toni Martinez and Marcus Browne, before drawing the second period 1-1 to take all three points. In the first half Marcus Browne and Toni Martinez was a constant threat to the Magpies defence, the Hammers eased off slightly during the second period and Newcastle pulled one back late on, though Martinez had already put the result beyond doubt by then.

Swansea run out 2-0 winners but it could have been different had the luck been on the visitors' side. It was a game that always looked likely to be won by the first scorers. Nathan Trott in goal impressed, saving a penalty late on, and Marcus Browne looked the most dangerous going forward. On 57 minutes Owain Jones put the home side ahead when he smashed a Tyler Reid cross into the roof of the net from close range. Swansea grabbed a second on 89 minutes when Botti Bia Bi went clear and comfortably slips the ball past Trott from 12 yards.

West Ham United' were defeated in the new EFL Checkatrade trophy at Coventry City in the new format competition. A young Hammers side came up short against a more experienced Coventry outfit, the Hammers' young Spaniard Toni Martinez was on the scoresheet twice in West Ham United's 4-2 defeat to an almost full-strength Coventry side Martinez's fourth and fifth goals of an already impressive first campaign at the Club, opened the scoring on half an hour, poking home after good persistence inside the penalty, but the Hammers were pegged back just three minutes later by Jordan Turnbull. Coventry went on to make the score 4-1 after goals from Ruben Lameiras, Jordan Willis and Turnbull again before Martinez netted a late consolation with a superb volley.
