The Hammers rounded off their pre-season preparations with an impressive win over Italian giants Roma at Upton Park. It was the perfect way for the squad to prepare for the beginning of the Premiership season and a number of players got another game under their belts.

Roma began brightly and were showing their class to the 26,425 crowd, as they put together a number of slick moves early on. The Italian club's captain and star man, Francesco Totti, was at the centre of most things they did well. However, when they took the lead on 13 minutes, it was a Frenchman who took the plaudits as Ludovic Giuly fired home a superb drive into Rob Green's top corner.

The visitors then clipped the bar and forced Green into three quality saves before half-time saw the introduction of Richard Wright and Dean Ashton.

Ashton was in fine form and twice went close before Hammers' equaliser came from the most unlikely of sources, when George McCartney rose highest to power a Ljungberg corner into the roof of the net.

The impetus was very much with West Ham and we took the lead just three minutes later. Mark Noble collected the ball in midfield and sent a fine pass out to the right which found Ashton. Faced up by one defender, the powerful hitman bamboozled his opponent with a step-over and burst into the box. From there the returning hero fired low and hard past Curci to give us the lead. The rest of the game went by without too much in the way of incident as the team completed a perfect preparation for the new season.

West Ham United stepped up their pre-season preparations with a rigorous work-out against Sigma Olomouc in Austria on Tuesday evening. Hammers suffered a 1-0 defeat against the Czech outfit, but of more concern to Alan Curbishley was an injury to new French signing Julien Faubert, who was taken off with an Achilles injury 10 minutes before the break. The 23-year-old winger will undergo a scan tomorrow to determine the extent of the damage. On a more positive note, Dean Ashton continued on the comeback trail with a decent 60-minute run-out, while Craig Bellamy made his Hammers debut and came close to grabbing a late equaliser with a 20-yard strike that crashed back off the crossbar. Sigma had grabbed the only goal of the game just before half-time, with a neat finish from close range following a well-worked move.

The reserve team secured a 3-1 friendly win over non-league side AFC Hornchurch. Goals from Junior Stanislas, Jack Jeffery and Zavon Hines sealed victory for Kevin Keen's young side, before the hosts grabbed a late consolation.

West Ham United were unfortunate to slip to a 2-0 defeat against Lazio in their third pre-season friendly of the summer on Saturday evening. In a tough encounter in the small Austrian village of Lebring, near Graz, goals either side of the break earned victory for the Italians, who are slightly ahead of Hammers in their pre-season preparations. Despite facing sharp opponents, though, Alan Curbishley's men were unlucky to end up on the losing side, after Craig Bellamy missed a 68th minute penalty and Carlton Cole had two efforts superbly saved by veteran Lazio goalkeeper Ballotta.

Striker Dean Ashton came comfortably through another 45 minutes, while Bellamy played the full 90. Mark Noble and Bobby Zamora were rested after picking up slight knocks in training. Despite the result, Alan Curbishley will have been satisfied by another strenuous work-out and will look back on their week in Austria as a valuable fitness exercise ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
