Paul Kitson scored a hat-trick in his comeback game in this friendly at Nene Park. Costa Rican midfield Maurizio Solis also played and did well and Ragnvald Soma turned out at left-back.

Coach Roger Cross explained: "Raggy hasn't had much opportunity to play in that position because of Scott Minto, but he did fine. Solis was neat and tidy and passed the ball around well.

"I was also pleased with Omer Riza. He worked hard and with a bit of luck might have scored a couple of goals. Hayden Foxe got a second game since breaking a finger and Steve Potts was as dependable as ever." Glen Johnson and an own goal completed the Hammers scoring.

Skonto Riga, the winners of the Latvian Leagueforthelast 10years, ended their European post-season tour with a friendly against the Hammers at Chadwell Heath. They came to England with the hope that West Ham United might be tempted to sign one of their players, but the Hammers lined up with a new signing of their own, Swedish international goalkeeper Sven Andersson. A veteran at 38, Andersson was consistent and strong throughout the game and could do little to prevent Skonto taking the lead. A cross from the right by Buitkus was met by Miholops, the team's top scorer for the season. It wasn't long before the Hammers scored a deserved equaliser when a chip from Niall Ritchie deceived the 'keeperjust before half-time. Leon Britton cameonfortriallist Rehviasvili in the second-half but despite some good penetrating runs could not find a way past Skonto's resolute defence. The Hammers were also strong in defence, with anothertriallist from Brann in Norway, AzarKaradas, making his presence felt. Skonto had previously beaten Crystal Palace and Yeovil.
