The visit of Southampton Reserves was expected to produce a keen encounter. It turned out to be interesting, but the Saints proved to have a little more experience than our XI. The visitors eventually won by a first-half goal, but thanks to an excellent display by ‘keeper Gary Moseley the Hammers were in with a chance until the final whistle.

The Hammers returned to top form, defeating a hitherto unbeaten Birmingham City side at St Andrew’s by three clear goals. The windy conditions made the ball difficult to control at times, but our team adapted themselves better than the Blues and were two up by the interval. George Cowie made an individual run from the half-way line for the first goal, and Bobby Barnes also had a solo effort to net the second. Cowie rounded it off in the last minute, so we returned to top place on goal-difference

After a fortnight without a fixture the Reserves returned to action with an earl - afternoon engagement with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The homesters netted twice before the interval, but as the second half was scoreless we conceded the points. Overall it was a somewhat disappointing performance on the Hammers' part.

Following a couple of disappointing reverses in their previous games, our second-string returned to form at Filbert Street and gained a point with a good second-half performance after being one down at the interval. Our goal was netted by Dale Banton, who we were pleased to see back in the line-up after his recent cartilage operation.

The Reserves opened the season with a visit to nearby Brisbane Road for a local derby v Orient. The Hammers twice held the lead, and after scoring the second goal had chances enough to put the issue beyond doubt; but O's equalised seven minutes from time to offset our counters by Dale Banton and Ray Houghton. Phil Brignull was injured during the first half, so player-coach Mick McGiven came on as substitute after the interval.

Our second-string made their first Upton Park appearance of the season, and again opposed London rivals. The Hammers were not in as benevolent a mood on this occasion, and went ahead through a trio of excellent goals by Billy Lansdowne, Glen Burvill and Bobby Barnes. The Cottagers reduced our margin just before half-time and succeeded in keeping the second half scoreless. Apprentice Keith McPherson came in at no.5 in place of the injured Phil Brignull, and did very well on his debut.

Our second-string made it five points out of six by defeating Norwich City Res. 4-3 at Upton Park. We were in the lead four times, but eventually prevented the Canaries from gaining a final equaliser. Glen Burvill and Anthony La Ronde both scored twice. Mark Smith played his first game this season, and Keith McPherson again did well in a central defence position.
