The away match against Millwall ended 3-0 in our favour, and was the outcome of a sound all-round performance in which the Hammers dominated from the starting-whistle. Two up at half-time, we were never in danger, and showed encouraging improvement upon earlier performances. Glyn Burville scored two and David Adleman one.

The under- 18's were well below full strength, several being required for the Combination line-up. This made Orient's task much easier at Chadwell Heath, although their 3-1 success was an unwelcome reverse for the Hammers. We were two down at the interval, Gary Pugh being our scorer in the second half.

Two goals in each half took our Under-18's to a comfortable win against Fulham at Chadwell Heath. The Cottagers are not well-placed, and we were always in command. Young Bobby Barnes got a couple to boost his scoring-total; Ray Houghton and Gary Pugh were the other scorers.

QUEENS PARK RANGERS : South East Counties League Division I

We hammered Queens Park Rangers to a 5-0 defeat at Chadwell Heath. Three up at half-time, our under 18's were always in command for one of their best performances this season. Bobby Barnes and Paul Merrigan scored two each, and Billy Hall completed the nap-hand.

A second-half goal gave Millwall the advantage in the first leg of this tie at The Den on Thursday 19 April. It was a close encounter, and we did well against a team which beat Everton by 1-0 in the first leg of the Semi-Final of the F.A. Youth Cup. The Lions' goal against us was scored three minutes from time.

The second leg will be played at Upton Park next Wednesday (2 May).

The Youth Team was very disappointing in the first half of the match v Portsmouth at Eastney, and changed over at the break four goals in arrears. A spirited rally in the early part of the second session reduced the margin, David Adleman and Gary Pugh each netting once; but the Sailors got back into the game after that, and a further counter made it 5- 2 at the final whistle.

As neither club had a Combination fixture that day, the teams for our match v Arsenal at Chadwell Heath on Sept. 23 were above usual Saturday strength. In most aspects we were as good as the Gunners, but the Hammers' finishing let them down and the end result was a 2-1 defeat. Gary Pugh scored our goal late in the game, Arsenal having already added to their half-time lead.

Although Chelsea were at the foot of the table before the game at Molesey, they rectified this with a 4-0 win over us. Our XI included only two pros, but the West Londoners were able to field several of their Reserve Team which was without a Combination fixture. The Hammers held them to a single goal in the first half, but experience told well before the final whistle.

78_10_24 Charlton Athletic v. WHU SJFC1

Gary Pugh scored in the second half of last Saturday's match for us to collect a couple of points in the away encounter with Orient. It was a close-fought duel, and the win was encouraging after recent reverses.

The under-18's had an exciting match against Charlton Athletic at the Unilever Ground. We were one up at the interval, but in a game of swaying fortunes both sides scored three times during the second half. The Hammers were always ahead, but the Athletic continually reduced the margin to one. Our 4-3 victory was deserved reward for a useful display.

We eventually won very comfortably against Charlton Athletic at The Valley on October 24 in a First Round tie of this competition, but had an early shock when the Reds took the lead. However, a goal by Gary Pugh levelled the count before the interval; a further counter by the same player, plus one each from George Cowie and Jason Wright made the final margin 4-1 in our favour.

Chadwell Heath : Away game played at training ground

2 - 1 (Holt, Pugh)

28 October 1978

Mills, Young, Hibbert, Allen, Adleman, Brignull, Houghton, La Ronde A., Pugh, Banton (Merrigan), Holt

This fixture was a Second Round tie in the Division I Cup. We had been drawn away to Norwich City, but the Canaries conceded ground advantage and the match took place at Chadwell Heath. After a scoreless first half, Gary Pugh and Ray Holt netted to put us in command, and we could have added to the margin before the visitors got a late consolation goal.

This First Round tie versus Southernd United at Upton Park nearly provided an unwelcome shock, as the Shrimpers were three up in 28 minutes, having opened the score a quarter-hour after the start. The Hammers were playing poorly, and could not even take advantage of an injury that temporarily reduced the opposition to ten men. However, we scrambled a goal nine minutes prior to the interval when Gary Pugh forced the ball home, and that made the prospects brighter. The Hammers gradually pulled the game round, and after skipper Phil Brignull (61 mins.) and Dale Banton (64 mins.) made the scores level, Southend had obviously lost the initiative. The winner arrived ten minutes from time when David Adelman headed home.

Our under-18's qualified for the Quarter-Final of this competition by defeating Oxford United at Upton Park on Monday 13 November.

The visitors showed some clever touches, but the Hammers scored at fairly regular intervals to run up a 4-0 margin. A nice turn and a left-foot shot by Ray Holt brought our first counter only eleven minutes after the start. Oxford were still in wilh a chance until the closing minutes of the half, but two further goals put us three up before the interval.

Gary Pugh eluded a jostling opponent to successfully terminate a solo run, and then a 15-yard shot by Tony La Ronde set the Hammers well in the driving seat. La Ronde scored again from a well-taken through pass halfway through the second half, to set the seal on a convincing victory.

We are at home in the Third Round to Gillingham or Millwall. Our tie is to be played by the end of February.

There was quite an amount of "needle" in the closing stages of the Third Round (Quarter-Final) tie against Millwall at Upton Park, although by the end of an hour's play we had built up a two-goal lead. Possibly the Young Lions were aggrieved at our taking revenge for the single-goal  margin by which they had defeated us in a S.E. Counties League match two days earlier.

Our XI was short of three "regulars," but their deputies proved well up to the task and materially assisted in a merited victory.

Millwall missed an easy chance of taking an interval lead, and paid for this when the perseverance of Ray Holt took advantage of a hesitant defence to latch on to a pass from Steve Hibbert three minutes into the second half. A George Cowie pass put Gary Pugh away on the left for the striker to hit home an unstoppable drive, that more-or-less settled the issue from thence onwards.

The Semi-Final will be played at Upton Park with Chelsea or Leicester City as our opponents.

The match at Watford brought an entirely unexpected reverse. The lowly-placed Hornels took a one-goal interval lead, but our rearguard virtually collapsed after half-time and the end result was 5-1 to the homesters. Mark Smith netted our consolation counter.

The under-18's made a very disappointing start, an XI including eight young pros and apprentices losing by a second half goal to Gillingham at Chadwell Heath on the opening day

Our only fixture for the Youth Section last Saturday was an engagement against Southend United at Chadwell Heath. The under 18's showed a considerable improvement upon the previous week, and won, comfortable 4-1 winners after leading 2-0 at the interval.
