The Hammers beat the touring club El Shibab from Kuwait 4-0 in a private practice match at Chadwell Heath. West Ham used the match to give team pivot Alvin Martin further match practice following a pre-season injury which has kept him out of action to date. The El Shibab side is managed by former Arsenal and Brentford winger Mike Everitt. Nicky Morgan netted two first-half goals, and George Cowie and anto Otulakowski added two more after the interval. Alvin Martin had his first outing of the season and came through successfully.

A pre-season series of four friendly matches for the First Team provided good tests, as in every case the engagements were played in a competitive spirit.

The visit to Swindon Town on August 5 brought an anxious aftermath, as it took a couple of days to allay fears in respect of the leg injury sustained by Bobby Ferguson; however, he was ready for action after week-end treatment.

At the time of Bobby's mishap we were ahead thanks to a goal by Bryan Robson; however, the Robins equalised when deputy 'keeper Trevor Brooking was beaten by a long shot. We recovered the initiative as Alan Devonshire and substitute Alan Taylor each netted in the second half, but the Town again benefitted by inexperience on our part to leave the final margin 3-2 in our favour.

A goodly percentage of Hammers' fans in the 2,720 attendance at Layer Road, where we opposed Colchester United in a pre-season challenge match.

Among a much-changed line-up we had Bert van Marwijk, a 25-year-old Dutch player from AZ Alkmaar 67; he has been capped once for Holland, and came over for a trial.

The Hammers were the first to score when Trevor Brooking lobbed over the opposing 'keeper in the 28th minute. Steve Foley headed home from close in to level the count a couple of minutes before half-time, and Tony Evans was credited with the goal that put his team ahead a minute after the resumption. Brooking scored his second with about a quarter-hour to go, and the final score of 2-2 was a fair representation of a pleasant evening.

We sustained a couple more mishaps to add to the enforced absences of David Cross and Alvin Martin; but apart from Martin the selected squad was available for Tuesday morning's departure to Norway, where we played two matches. The first of these took place in Bergen on the following day: our opponents were SK Brann. We have played against them in each of the past two years, winning 1-0 and 3-2. We anticipated another close game, but although the issue was decided only by Bryan Robson's first-half goal, it might well have been more decisive.

Our starting line-up for Thursday's match at Alesund was exactly the same as on the previous night. We last met Alesund three years ago - winning 5-1; on this occasion it was again an easy victory for the Hammers. Bryan Robson and Alan Taylor netted one each before half-time, and David Cross added two more in the second half for a 4-0 success. It was pleasing to renew acquaintance with ex-Hammer Bobby Gould, who is now coach of Alesund.

The officials-in-charge were Ron Boyce, Tony Carr, Dick Arnold and Dave Gladstone. The youngsters finished in fifth place in the Easter Tournament.

The youngsters finished in fifth place, the group games we lost 0-2 against Bayern Munich through a couple of defensive errors. Missed chances cost us a win against Vejle Boldklub of Denmark, a goalless draw resulting. We then beat Union Solingen of West Germany through a goal by Dale Banton. An extra point would have qualified the Hammers for the Semi-Final. Our concluding match was v FC Zurich; Banton netted another and Ray Houghton scored our other goal.
