73_11_10 Swindon Town v. WHU

In our visit to White Hart Lane Spurs Reserves dominated the first-half exchanges of our Combination fixture, but failed to open their account despite heavy pressure. However, Paul Sussams celebrated his first professional appearance by putting the Hammers ahead before the interval, and we held this 1-0 margin at the final whistle. Our second-string thus secured a valuable couple of points from a match which had been expected to end in favour of the North Londoners.

The match with Queens Park Rangers was played in the afternoon at Rangers Stadium. The result on this occasion was not to our advantage, the final 2-0 margin reflecting the West Londoners' superiority. The homesters netted once in each half, and were good value for their success.

We entertained Chelsea Reserves for our first home fixture of the season. The visitors took an early lead, but we drew level before the interval with a Clive Charles penalty. The Hammers took command during the second half, and earned the points when Yilmaz Orhan scored after a good run down the middle.

Both Peter Grotier and John McDowell came through this test without any effects after their recent incapacities.

We entertained the 1972-73 champions Ipswich Town Reserves to Upton Park. In a closely-contested match the score was 3-2 in our favour. A goal by Ade Coker kept us on level terms at the interval, but the visitors again took the lead in the second half. Yilmaz Orhan then scored twice in the last ten minutes to secure the points at the end of an interesting game.

The first half against Crystal Palace was a pretty boring affair, for although scoring opportunities were created by both sides, there never appeared to be much likelihood of a goal.

However, the second half brought a drastic change; it started ten minutes after the resumption with a couple from the Hammers within the space of 90 seconds; this was followed by an immediate reply for the Glaziers, but at the 64th minute we were 4-1 ahead. The pace slackened a little after that, but each side got another to make it 5-2 with a quarter-hour to go. The game ended that way, but the faithful fans who provide regular support for our second-string were deservedly rewarded with a goal-feast and the Reserves highest score of the season.
