International Youth Tournament - Rheinfelden (West Germany)

Our Youth squad participated in an Under - 19 International Tournament at Rheinfelden, West Germany, during the first week of June, but although retaining an undefeated record they did not win the competition.

We played five matches, each of them ending in a draw at full time. The first three were against West German clubs; Bayern Munich had several escapes before the game ended 0-0; Armenia Bielefeld scored first but Chester Brown equalised to make the final score 1-1; and then there was a further goalless match v Eintracht Frankfurt. Ujpest Dosza of Hungary were our fourth opponents, and again it ended goalless. We drew 0 0 again with the Hungarians for the third-place play-off, but the Central Europeans gained the day by netting all their five penalty-kicks in the decider, whilst we missed two of ours. Bayern Munich were winners of the Tournament.

Individual Hammers to win tournament prizes were Chester Brown for sportsmanship and Chris Smith (our outstanding player).
