1968-69 Metropolitan league 'A'

Towards the end of last season West Ham had contemplated disbanding the 'A' Team as such and dropping out of the Metropolitan League. However, the club revised their plans and stayed in a competition which now consists of 16 clubs. Among these are newcomers in Bletchley, Romford Reserves, Stevenage Athletic, and Wellingborough Town. Brentwood Town Reserves and Chatham Town have resigned. John Lyall will be in charge of the 'A' Team with Archie Wood as team-attendant.

Against professional Hatfield Town our "A" Team played well considering that we had a very young side out. Stuart Morgan was unlucky not to score early on when his shot was headed off the line, but after 20 minutes Terry Scales passed to Tony Carr who rounded the centre-half to score. Hatfield mounted a lot of pressure just after half-time and equalised. But within ten minutes we were once again in the lead ; Scales and Carr were again the responsible combination ; the winger overlapped down the left, the goalkeeper could not hold his cross and Carr headed inside the far post. Hatfield's second equaliser came with a few minutes to go.

Newly - elected Bletchley earned themselves two points through a useful exhibition but the Hammers third-string could consider themselves a little unfortunate in-as-much that they found themselves two goals down at the interval when one would have been a fairer representation. The Buckinghamshire side got a very good goal in the 19th minute, but from then on we were also doing well. However, with four minutes to go to half-time the Tangerines put in another attack; our defenders came out to charge down the ball, but it rebounded off one of them to an opponent who would otherwise have been offside and he had no difficulty in making it 2 - 0. The score remained that way after an even concluding 45 minutes.

Making his debut for us was amateur Clyde Best, who was a member of the Bermudan squad for the World Cup qualifying competition. He is well over 6-ft tall and came over for an extended trial at the start of the season.

After a defeat and a draw in their first two games, our "A" team gained a win against Wimbledon Reserves at Chadwell Heath. Tony Carr got our first goal in the 21st minute, but the Dons levelled up the count eight minutes later following an indirect free-kick on our six-yards line; this was taken as our team formed up on the goal-line, and was diverted into the net to give our defenders no chance of stopping it. With seven minutes of the second half gone Brennan moved from left to right across field with, the ball and then slipped a reverse pass to Stephen Lay whose hard shot went just inside the post. We retained the 2-1 lead until the end to gain a deserved success, Peter Grotler was having his first competitive game of 1968-69 following his absence through injury, and he came through satisfactorily. Brennan is a trialist from the Norwich area, and both he and our new pro - Keith Pointer (also from Norwich) showed up well in attack.

After a couple of games in their Autumn Shield group, our "A" Team has now resumed its regular schedule in the Metropolitan League. Having taken an away point v Wimbledon Reserves in their first Shield game our third-string went one better in the mid-week engagement at Cray Wanderers. They emerged as comfortable winners by a 3-1 margin to make their total three points, but appear likely to face harder competition next month when they meet Sheppey United who are the fourth team in this particular section

The league leading Spurs "A" side suffered a shock reverse at the hands of our "A" Team in the Second Round of the Metropolitan League Professional Cup on March 1st, going down by 2-1 to a very young Hammers' side on their home ground at Cheshunt.

We are now in the Semi-Final, along with Bedford Town Reserves, Romford Reserves, and Bury Town or Hatfield Town.

Our third-string continues to hold its place among the leaders in the Met. League table, but although they have a better-than-50% record will inevitably be overtaken by some of the clubs who have games in hand. They picked up another point last Saturday in a 1-1 draw at Sheppey, but considered themselves a little unfortunate in putting the bail into the net three more times — all these "goals" being disallowed.

The Hammers visited Wellingborough to play off a twice-postponed engagement with the Town side, netting a "nap hand" against the Northamptonshire club in a match where the exchanges were amply reflected by the 5-0 score in our favour. David Llewelyn had a great evening, netting four of our goals

Our League fixture at Imber Court against Metropolitan Police resulted ina 1-1 draw. Our side did very well indeed, and fought back to gain a deserved point.

Fifth-placed Stevenage Athletic had quite a shock at losing 3-1 on Good Friday, this being only their fifth League reverse of the season.

However, it was our turn to be at the receiving end on the following day, lowly-placed Winbledon Reserves scoring three time without reply.

The Hammers' third-string did very well to beat Romford Reserves at Brooklands in the Pro. Cup Semi-Final. We overcame the conditions to play some good football and led at half-time after. Clyde Best converted a 25-yard free-kick. The homesters equalised ten minutes from normal time, but we came back to go ahead once more in the first period of extra time, Tony Carr being our scorer. The score remained at 2-1, the Hammers thereby qualifying to meet Bletchley in the two-legged Final which due to fixture congestion is deferred to next season.
