The pitch was in poor shape, being heavy in all parts. The Berkshire club adapted themselves far better to these conditions and moved the ball "first time" with plenty of punch. In contrast we played the wrong type of game until the later stages, and lack of power meant slow progress in the mud. We were one down at the interval, and went further in arrears to 0-3 (one a penalty) before Terry McDonald netted to make the final count 1-3 against us.

1957-58 Metro 1959-60 Metro Season 1958-59

This was a game of changing fortunes which finally went in favour of the Metropolitan League leaders. One up at half-time, Arsenal found themselves in arrears after the interval through a shot by Harry Obeney and an "own goal". However, the Gunners came back into the picture with a late rally to win 4-2

Bob Curry soon put us ahead from John Cartwricht's through pass and George Fenn made it 2-0 after half-an-hour. Beford reduced their arrears befor teh interval, but were swamped after the resumption as their defence had no answer to our attack, Tony Scott and Derek Woodley playing very well on the wings. Fenn and Scott (2) added further goals, and although the Town converted a penalty for hands the Hammers were worthy 5-2 winners.

Inclement weather : Rearranged as an AWAY game on 30 March 1959

Hastings United Reserves secured a deserved success in the Semi-Final of the Metropolitan League Professional Cup at the Pilot Field when they beat our "A" Team by 2-1. Their inside-right hit a grand goal after half-an-hour's play and the Seasiders added another before the interval.

During the first half George Fenn appeared the only Hammers' forward who was likely to score, and his second-half tally was just reward for his efforts.
