The early games of the 1957-58 campaign gave no indication of what was in store come April time. Five matches were lost in August and September, but the signing of Vic Keeble from Newcastle United in October, changed all that. By Christmas the Hammers had won 31 points and scored 47 goals. The attack went from strength to strength with Rotherham United on the receiving end of eight-nil hammering. Seven doubles were achieved, the last of which, at Middlesbrough clinched the Second Division title.
