MAIDENHEAD UNITED MINORS : Youth Match

Away

3 - 1

2 May 1958

58_04_25 Maidenhead United Minors v. WH Colts

Morton, Cripps, Roberts, Moore, Keetch, Bovington, Woodley, Brooks, Keeble R., Rowlands, Scott

This is the story of the two £10,000 debutants who played each other with credit. But the match glory went to a chap who cost nothing more than a £10 signing on fee, inside-left John Dick. Five-figure man Vic Keeble made his West Ham debut at centre-forward 36 hours after signing from Newcastle United.

Five-figure man Jan Schilders made his Sparta debut at centre-half three months after signing from third division club Volendam. Keeble won the dual of the debs with a most efficient first game but 24-year-old John Dick won the cheers with three good goals.

Lanky Keeble wasted no time showing how well that cash had been spent on him. He scored with a shot from Dick’s opening inside four minutes. Sparta then had their best 20 minutes of the match. They patten-wove prettily, but ineffectively near goal, and Dick put them two down with his first goal. Goal No.3, a John Smith penalty, should never have been, Referee C. Woan was anything but a Dutch uncle when he rules Malcolm Musgrove to be unfairly tackled. After the breack Dick scored two more.

Two second half penalties made certain West Ham's well-deserved victory against L.K.S. Lodz o[ Poland under the Upton Park floodlights.

The first was banged home by right-back Bond, the second by centre-half Brown - after the 'keeper had parried his first attempt.

It was Hammers' 100th match against foreign opposition and their 65th victory.

The Poles showed themselves to be a team of ball tappers, whose neat interchanging and distribution were a joy to watch. Buy in contrast to the Hammers, they lacked punch in the middle and their forwards were shot-shy.

Vic Keeble whose presence in the centre has rejuvenated the Hammers, led the line with skill and his understanding with his inside men. Dick and Smith, was mainly responsible for the Hammers' win.

Johnny Dick was the other West Ham scorer and Andy Malcolm scored an own goal for Lodz.
