Over 1,200 Hammers' supporters made the journey to Goodison Park for the F.A. Cup tie against Everton. It was no easy proposition, and the robust opposition gave our XI no opportunity of settling down in the opening minutes. In addition the home supporters made no secret of the fact that they expected their favourites to run Second Division opposition into the ground, and both the referee and our players had to face a partisan gathering.

"Fortunately, stern measures helped to keep the game in hand, and although the referee's decision to take the name of one of the Blues did not meet with the approval of the Liverpudlians it certainly made the atmosphere a little calmer.

The Hammers played some good football, and in comparison their skill should have earned them at least a draw. Unfortunately this was not to be, and. when it looked odds-on a replay taking place at Upton Park, we were deprived of this pleasure by skipper Peter Farrell, who was ' Johnny on the spot' to bang home a ball which came to him just outside the penalty-box from a punched clearance.
