MATCH POSTPONED
Extremely Unfavourable weather in Lincolnshire : rearranged for 11 February 1956
A most unwelcome shock was registered at Upton Park when Assistant Trainer Harry Butier telephoned from Harwich after the Eastern Counties League game, for he conveyed the news that our "A" Team had sustained a 4 1 defeat at the hands of last season's "wooden spoonists," We had sent a strong side to the East Sussex town, and had felt that the line-up would take at least one point from their opening game:
However, inexperience proved to he the decisive factor, and our very youns side, all 21 or under were well beaten, Moore reducing the margin at a late stage of the game.
The Hammers showed a 100 percent improvement on their display of the previous Saturday when they were well-beaten at Harwich, and more than contributed their share to an interesting afternoon.
Good goaikeeping kept our score down to 1-0 at half-time, this tally being notched by Walker with a shot from 20 yards after the opposing pivot had miskicked. Our forwards continued to shoot from all angles after the resumption and gave the home defence a hot time, but with 12 minutes to go Bury scored a rather fortuitous goal. Our defence allowed the ball to run over the bye-line for the referee to award a goal-kick; however, the linesman persuaded him to alter his decision to a corner-kick, and the swerving "inswinger" deceived our defence for the equaliser to deprive us of full spoils.
Our "A" Team match was in the First Round of the Eastern Counties League Cup against Sudbury Town at Priory Stadium.
The Suffolk club has been applying for admission to the E.C.L. for some seasons and achieved their ambition during last close-season when the size of the competition was increased. They are at present managed by ex-Crystal Palace player Wally Hanlon who (ills one of the forward positions. Others in the side include professionals Willy Jones dormer Ipswich Town), Ray Warne (Ipswich Town), l.en Cator (Tunbridge Wells) and Ron George (Colchester United) whilst the Suffolk County full-back Ken Smith has returned from Melford to his former club this season.
The game was not a very exciting one and we should have ensured a victory in the opening half by accepting our chances. However, the home side were just as remiss and it was a penalty-goal (for hands) 15 minutes from time that uave them a 1-0 win.

There was a very sparse attendance at this Eastern Counties League match against Eynesbury Rovers.
Altogether the game was rather a scrappy one and got little satisfaction from a 3-2 defeat. Things never went right for our XI and the cards seemed stacked against them when Eynesbury took the lead with a twice-taken penalty the linesmen having adjudged that Chiswick
had moved too soon even though the referee at first gave no indication that he had seen any infringement. Fenn equalised to make it 1-1 at half-time, but two goals put the Rovers ahead after the interval (our protests for "offside" on the first being turned down). Wragg reduced the arrears two minutes from time but we could not snatch a point despite the continuation of this late rally.
The spectators had full value for their money with seven goals scored in a very good game in which fortunes fluctuated throughout. A defensive mishap let in the homesters for a goal 20 minutes after the start, but Matthews made it 1-1 before the interval when he followed up to score after Franklyn's hard shot had been parried by the goalkeeper. The outstanding feature of the second half was a hat-trick by Fenn. whose performance was capped by three very good goals, the last coming ten minutes from time to give us a 4-3 win after we had led by 2-1 and 3-2 (only for our opponents to twice draw level). A mishap to Roy Smith caused him to change places with Wragg in the second half, but it worked rather to our advantage as the latter did extremely well at inside-forward.
Our "A" Team visited Chelmst'ord last Saturday to the City Reserves, who had lost their eight opening matches in the Eastern Counties League. When they departed they left behind a still-disappointed side who had yet again gone down to defeat.
The game had not been a very good one, but our third-string had proved more than adequate for the task despite the homesters taking the lead following a corner-kick in the 20th minute. The Hammers drew level about ten minutes before the interval when the goal-keeper fumbled the ball to present Wragg with an easy chance, but the winning goal by the same scorer was a very good effort that concluded a long run down the left wing after he had moved over from the other flank.
Our "A" Team continued their improved form in the Eastern Counties League by taking a point from the present runners-tip at Cambridge last Saturday, The game was played on a rather bumpy surface that was m somewhat poor condition, and the light ball was in consequence rather difficult to control; nevertheless some good football was seen, and altogether the result was a fair one.
The home side went ahead ten minutes after the interval when one of their forwards took advantage of a mis-placed back-pass to accept an easy opening. Our equaliser came about a quarler-of-an-hour later, Pyke initiating an opening for Wragg to net.
Although rated as a 100-1 on chance by Daily Mail reporter Doug Wilson. Chelsea Colts had a difficult job to force a 2—1 win here last Tuesday in the Final of the Southern Junior Floodlight Cup. Indeed, the visitors could consider themselves fortunate to gain the spoils in a game that provided first-rate football, despite the heavy mist spoiling the match as a spectacle for the 5,000 present.
First-time tackling by the Hammers' defence and a fine goalkeeping performance by Rhodes kept the much-vaunted Chelsea forward-line at bay until Nicholas equalised in the 64th minute, and it was an in-off-the-post shot by Allen three minutes from time that gained his side the day when he evaded Roberts for the first real chance he had.
At the other end our forwards gave the visiting goalkeeper several anxious moments, and Medlock brought off the save of the match when he turned a "blaster" from Smith round the post. McDonald hammered the ball home in the 20th minute after Barrick and Lundstrum had seen their efforts charged down, and the Hammers' front-line compared extremely favourably with their rivals'.
