Nearly 2,000 fans made their way through the fog to the Football Combination fixture at Upton Park, but only partially saw 55 minutes of football before the referee was forced to abandon the game through the visibility being literally down to nil.
Among the Pensioners' XI were many with First Division appearances to their credit, including Jimmy Smith, Bobby Smith, Roelf Oelofse and the two recent expensive signings - Ron Greenwood and Les Stubbs.

Following upon last season's recommendations it has been decided to divide the Football Combination into two Divisions. The eight teams filling the topmost places in the respective sections during 1951-52 are now members of Division One and the remaining 16 comprise Division Two. The decision was also taken that relegation and promotion will be on the "four up, four down" basis gives added spice that will ensure interest is maintained until the end of the league fixtures. The latter part of the season will be devoted to the Combination Cup competition.
