1939-40 Regional Competions : SOUTH "A"

CRYSTAL PALACE : South 'A' Division

At the time the war started in Europe West Ham United issued a 10 inch x 7.5 inch programme of four pages. Those for public sale were printed on blue paper, but a small number were on white for issue to press, guests, etc., Blue was mainly used, as the paper was cheaper than for white, and therefore helped to keep down costs - particularly so as the price per copy was one old penny.

During (and after) World War II a variety of colours were eventually used, as paper was in such short supply that it was necessary to print on whatever came to hand. Hence, collectors may find some yellow, green pink, etc, copies in their files.

THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE WAR CUP

The Football League War Cup was an English football competition held with the aim of helping to fill the gaping hole left in English football by the FA Cup's cancellation. It was one of several competitions held to provide football matches to entertain the public while the major competitions were suspended; others included the London War Cup (1940/41 - 1941/42).

Arsenal went into the match at Upton Park knowing that a win against the Hammers would make them South “A” Division champions. However West Ham had other ideas as the home side ran out 3-0 winners with goals by Barrett, Fenton and Foreman. The Gunners clinched the title five days later against their north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
