WILLIAM WAUGH makes his Hammers debut against LEICESTER CITY at Filbert Street

2 February 1922

RON CATER (1946-1949) Born this day Fulham London

A utility defender who joined the ground staff at West Ham aged 14 years in 1936. Although he was born in West London, the youngster turned out for East Ham Boys as well as the London side. During WW2 he served in the Essex Regiment and the Royal Artillery, being stationed in the north of England. There, he played as a guest player for Blackburn Rovers, Doncaster Rovers and Preston North End. Cater also played as an amateur for Leytonstone before making his unofficial first team bow at Highfield Road against Coventry City in December 1945 in a War-time Football League South fixture. His full West Ham United debut came in an FA Cup 6-0 thrashing of Arsenal at Upton Park on the 5 January 1946, Ron made his Football League bow against Plymouth Argyle in a 1-3 defeat at Home Park on the 31 August 1946. He stayed with the Hammers for a further four season making 63 league appearances and seven in the FA Cup before he took the same short journey as so many other former Hammers when he left the club to join Leyton Orient in June 1951. The left-back played in 13 league games in the Third Division before going into non-league football with Dover and Sittingbourne.

WILLIAM HENDERSON makes his Hammers debut against CRYSTAL PALACE at Upton Park

TOMMY HODGSON and WILLIAM WILLIAMS both make their Hammers debut against BLACKPOOL at Bloomfield Road

16 May 1922

KEN WRIGHT (1946-1949) Born this day Newmarket, Suffolk

Making his war-time debut as a guest player in the 3-1 victory over Millwall 20 February 1943 and made a total seven guest appearances and was awarded the distinguished Flying Cross for his heroic deeds during the Second World War while in the RAF. He made a toatal seven guest appearances but due to the transitionary, regionalised nature of the competition, the statistics were never registered in official Football League records. Just as they had in the third and final match of the truncated 1939-40 season. Kenneth Lawrence Wright joined West Ham United from Cambridge City as an amateur and signed pro forms in May 1946. A forward with an eye for goal, his long awaited recorded Hammers debut came against Leicester City in a disappointing 0-2 defeat at Upton Park on the 7 September 1946. He played only six more matches that campaign, scoring his solitary goal in a 2-1 defeat at Coventry City. Maintained a good scoring ratio during his four seasons at the Boleyn.
